The Myth of Justice.

by Robin Ess

Will and Jada Smith have once again gone viral. The world heard Will Smith when he yelled at Chris Rock from his seat at the Oscars,

"Keep my wife's name out yo fucking mouth (twice)!"

This, after "slapping" Rock for making fun of Jada's bald head. Yes, those actions could be considered gallant or chivalrous, except August had more than Jada's name in his mouth, and there was no slap.

In Will's defense, folks will say,"

"But that's different; they had an arrangement"…or… "they had an open marriage."

One could ask,

If it is so different, what made the Smiths schedule what regular people call a private conversation on global platforms? Why was this interesting duo everywhere on TV, online, doing interviews, in blogs, on radio shows, and even on Jada's "Red Table Talk," discussing Jada's affair with August? Clearly, Will took issue with something because there are memes of him all red-eyed and crying and presenting as if something was wrong?"

Here are a few scenarios:

  1. August could have decided that he and Jada didn't need Will as a "third."

  2. Jada could have decided that she and August didn't need Will as a "third."

  3. Will could have either gotten out of the picture or may have never been in the picture.

  4. Then again, it could have been set it up to trend. We'll never know.

All of this was said to say,

"If there were ever a reason for Will Smith to slap another man, then surely it should have been when August ran all up, in, out, and through Jada. Smith didn't slap August. However, he took the time (on national TV) to casually stroll to the stage to slap Chris Rock for doing much less, and went back to his seat and proceeded to yell at Rock from the audience.

One could wonder why with all the video evidence, Will Smith was not treated like a man who committed assault. Even if Rock refused the press charges, charging decisions are up to the prosecutor.

It's no different than the eight cops in Wake County, NC, who kidnapped and framed over 15 black men for trafficking heroin using fake evidence. Even with evidence that the officers knew what they were doing, Wake County District Attorney, Lorrin Freeman, says that she can see how things could have been handled differently within the police department but does not see criminal intent. It's interesting because the media would have its viewers believe that there was only one cop involved....when the reality is there are at least eight.
