No Peter, That's not What I Meant

Hello Faithful Reader,

I had to stop I was I was doing to address statements made by a weirdo named "Peter" on one of my comments.

For clarity, when I say  cultural appropriation I am speaking in the context of appropriating Black culture, referring to a situation where individuals or groups from a different culture (often a dominant or more privileged culture) adopt elements of Black culture in a way that is disrespectful, misinformed, or exploits those cultural elements. This can occur in various forms, such as fashion, language, music, hairstyles, and religious practices....basic thinkers think it only applies to food. Key aspects and concerns related to the appropriation of Black culture include:

  • Lack of Understanding and Respect: Often, cultural appropriation involves a superficial or stereotypical understanding of the cultural elements being adopted. It lacks depth, respect, or acknowledgement of the historical and cultural significance behind those elements.

  • Power Dynamics: Cultural appropriation frequently occurs in the context of unequal power dynamics, where a dominant culture takes from a marginalized or minority culture without permission, often trivializing significant cultural practices or symbols.

  • Economic Exploitation: In some cases, cultural appropriation involves profiting from the cultural elements of a marginalized group without acknowledging, compensating, or respecting the source culture. This is particularly problematic when the source community itself has been historically marginalized or oppressed.

  • Historical Context: The historical context of oppression and marginalization of Black communities plays a crucial role in why cultural appropriation is harmful. When elements of a culture that has been historically oppressed are used by those from a dominant culture, especially in a trivial or disrespectful manner, it can be seen as a continuation of patterns of disrespect and exploitation.

  • Erasure and Misrepresentation: Appropriation can contribute to the erasure or distortion of the true meaning and origins of cultural practices and symbols. This often leads to misrepresentation and stereotypes about the culture being appropriated.

It's important to differentiate between cultural appropriation and cultural exchange. Cultural exchange is mutual and respectful, involving understanding, consent, and equal power dynamics, whereas cultural appropriation is one-sided and often involves elements of disrespect or exploitation.

Until Next Time,

Robin Ess
