Hello Faithful Reader,
I hope this month's Black Birdseye View News finds you well. In this edition, I’m breaking down two key topics that could impact your vote: Donald Trump’s legal battles and his proposed Project 2025. Let’s dive in so you can be better informed come election day!
Donald Trump’s Legal Battles:
Former President Donald Trump is currently facing several legal cases.
In 2023, Trump was indicted (officially charged) on 34 felony counts in New York. These charges claim that Trump falsified business records to cover up hush money payments made to adult film actress Stormy Daniels. The payments were allegedly made during his 2016 presidential campaign to keep her quiet about an affair. Trump has denied these claims and pleaded not guilty to all charges.
Here’s a quick overview of the major legal cases against him:
Federal Cases:
January 6th Investigation: This case looks into whether Trump tried to interfere with the 2020 election results by encouraging the attack on the U.S. Capitol.
Classified Documents Case: Trump is accused of taking and mishandling important government documents after he left office.
State Cases:
Georgia Election Interference: Trump is facing charges for allegedly trying to change the results of the 2020 election in Georgia.
New York Criminal Case: This case involves the hush money payments to Stormy Daniels.
New York Civil Fraud Case: Trump’s company, the Trump Organization, is being sued for financial fraud, meaning they may have lied about their finances.
Civil Cases:
E. Jean Carroll Case: Writer E. Jean Carroll accused Trump of sexually assaulting her in the 1990s. While he wasn’t found guilty of a crime, in 2023 and 2024, two civil trials found him responsible for sexual abuse and defamation (damaging someone’s reputation by lying), and he was ordered to pay $5 million and $83 million in damages.
Project 2025:
Now let’s talk about Project 2025, a plan that could change the way the U.S. government operates if Trump wins the next election. The project was created by conservative groups who agree with Trump’s ideas and would give more power to the president while making the government smaller. Here’s a simple breakdown of the plan:
Shrinking the Government: The goal is to reduce the size of the federal government by giving more power to people who are appointed by the president, while firing many long-time government workers who don’t agree with the administration.
Giving More Power to the President: The president would have more control over government agencies, with fewer restrictions from Congress or the courts.
Reshaping Key Departments: Agencies like the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) and DOJ (Department of Justice) could be downsized or reorganized, especially if they opposed Trump’s policies in the past.
Deregulation: The plan would reduce rules for industries like oil, gas, and coal, focusing on helping businesses grow with fewer environmental restrictions.
Stricter Immigration Policies: Trump’s plans, like building more of the border wall and limiting legal immigration, would come back. This includes tougher asylum rules.
America First Foreign Policy: The plan focuses on putting America’s interests first, cutting back on foreign aid and making tougher trade deals.
Opposing “Woke” Policies: Project 2025 wants to remove programs related to diversity, equity, and inclusion, especially in schools and the military.
How They Plan to Do It:
Firing Government Workers: A big part of the plan is replacing government employees with people who support Trump’s agenda. They would use a special rule called Schedule F to make it easier to fire people and bring in new workers loyal to the president.
Pre-Written Executive Orders: Trump’s team already has executive orders ready to go, so he can quickly put these changes in place without needing approval from Congress.
Project 2025 might have big impacts on Black and Brown communities. Here’s how:
1. Government Jobs and Job Security
What It Proposes: Project 2025 wants to fire many government workers and replace them with people who agree with the administration’s plans. A rule called Schedule F would make it easier to fire workers.
Impact on Black and Brown Communities: Many Black and Brown people have stable jobs in the federal government. If they lose these jobs, it could hurt their families financially. Government jobs have been an important source of good employment for these communities.
2. Ending Diversity Programs
What It Proposes: The plan aims to get rid of government programs that focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), especially in schools, the military, and other agencies.
Impact on Black and Brown Communities: These programs help ensure that Black and Brown people are treated fairly and have opportunities to succeed. If they are cut, it could mean fewer chances for these communities to get ahead in education and the workplace.
3. Stricter Immigration Rules
What It Proposes: Project 2025 wants to bring back strict immigration rules, such as building more of the border wall and making it harder for people to immigrate to the U.S.
Impact on Black and Brown Communities: These rules could make it harder for immigrants, especially from Latin American, African, and Caribbean countries, to come to or stay in the U.S. This could affect families and communities who rely on immigration for better opportunities.
4. Environmental Changes
What It Proposes: The plan pushes for fewer rules for industries like oil and gas, meaning less regulation on pollution.
Impact on Black and Brown Communities: Black and Brown neighborhoods are often closer to factories and polluted areas. Fewer rules could make these areas even more polluted, which could lead to health problems like asthma.
5. Economic Impact
What It Proposes: Project 2025 focuses on helping businesses grow by cutting government regulations, especially in energy and manufacturing.
Impact on Black and Brown Communities: While this might create jobs, Black and Brown communities might not benefit as much. They have historically faced barriers to getting high-paying jobs in these industries, and less regulation could also mean fewer protections for workers.
6. Health and Social Programs
What It Proposes: While the plan doesn’t focus directly on health or social programs, reducing the size of the government could lead to cuts in programs like Medicaid and SNAP (food stamps).
Impact on Black and Brown Communities: Many families in these communities rely on these programs for healthcare, food, and housing. If the programs are cut, it could make it harder for them to get the help they need.
Project 2025 could bring a lot of changes that might negatively impact Black and Brown communities, especially in areas like jobs, immigration, health, and access to government support. It's important to be aware of these potential impacts when thinking about the future.
Concerns and Criticism:
Some people are worried that Project 2025 would give too much power to the president and weaken the system of checks and balances that keeps our government fair. Others, like environmentalists, fear that rolling back regulations could harm public health and the environment.
Stay informed and remember that your vote matters.
Until next time,
Robin Ess
